Nursery

The Nursery staff would like to say a big thank you to all children, parents, grandparents, friends etc who have contributed to our special events this term. We have collected for Children in Need, Red Nose Day and tokens from Walkers Crisps. Well done to all. Please keep collecting the tokens. We hope you were all pleased with your photographs as this also contributes to school funds.

The children are looking forward to Easter and the arrival of the Easter Bunny. Take care of your sunflowers and let us have a picture when they are 5 metres tall. We do hope you have had another visit to the library and encouraged your child to borrow books.

Key Stage 1

Reception

The reception children have been observing and recording the weather this term. They have enjoyed watching and feeding the birds together with a hen and a squirrel.

They walked around the school looking at the different buildings and the people who work in school and have made a large picture of our school.

Year 1

Y1 children have enjoyed the term and have worked hard; we have done work about the Celts, Houses and Homes, Food and Healthy Eating. We have had very interesting visits from the school nurse. During the last week of term everyone enjoyed making pizzas and we all took them home for our tea.

Year 2

The year began with Y2 being taught for four weeks by Miss Rachel Evans, a 2nd year student at Edge Hill College.
The children enjoyed the lessons, which were interesting and challenging. Miss Evans successfully completed her teaching practice.
The Year 2 children are now preparing for the SAT tests in May, the results of which will be passed to parents in the written reports at the end of the school year.

Key Stage 2

Judo

Some children from Y3 - Y6 have taken the opportunity to learn Judo skills with the help of a fully qualified Judo instructor. They have all enjoyed this experience and gained a certificate for their efforts.

Tudor Theatre

Y4 took part in historical theatre workshops on Wednesday the 17th of March. The company were dressed very authentically and really brought to life many aspects of Tudor life. The children participated enthusiastically and loved pretending to be the many varied characters of this period both famous and infamous!

Ludus Dance

The performance “SOLD” was attended by most Y5/Y6 pupils on 17th March at the performing arts centre in Hindley. It was a powerful and moving piece of choreography which dealt with the very emotive issue of child labour.

The children gained an insight into this problem and the linked one of commercial exploitation. As a follow up to this, Ludus Dance members will be working in school with the children who watched “SOLD”, the workshops take place on Thursday 25th of March.

Swimming Gala

Children from Y5 and Y6 have been taking part in the Wigan Inter-Schools Swimming Galas at Hindley Swimming Pool. The standard of swimming at the Galas is very high. Each race is timed, the fastest 6 swimmers going through to the finals. Our swimmers always do their best and this year has been no exception. Bronze medals were received for individual events and by the Y5 Boys Relay team. The swimmers for Y6 were very successful in their heats, several children going through to the finals of their individual events. The Y6 boys relay team came second in their heat narrowly missing out on the final. The Y6 girls relay team swam magnificently to gain the Gold medal. Congratulations to all who took part.

Football

The school football team has played two matches during the past few weeks.
All Saints (away) A hat trick from Nicholas Rimmer capped a very good team performance with excellent passing from defence to attack. Final score 0 - 3.
St. James (away) The game was played in windy conditions. St. James had the wind behind them in the first half and at half time led 2 - 0. We scored within a minute of the restart, but just failed to force an equaliser, from a number of attempts at goal. Final score 2 - 1.

Science Challenge

4 pupils from Y6, represented the school in the Science Challenge competition for primary schools at Westleigh High School, where they spent an enjoyable morning solving three challenging scientific problems.

Bugsy Malone

A big thank you to Shevington High School who invited Y6 to watch a performance of this musical on Tuesday 23rd of March.
Lots of pupils will hopefully be inspired to take part in productions themselves when they attend the High School in September.
It was also very pleasing to see so many of our ex-pupils in the show. Well done to everyone involved!

Red Nose Day

Many thanks to everyone for their support on Red Nose Day. The children really enjoyed both performing in and watching the concert by the Y6 girls. The cakes and biscuits were very popular and a complete sell out. A special thank you must go to Sarah Vidler who, with the help of friends, particularly Katrina Johnson and Lucy Cattle, spent an enormous amount of time, effort and money to help those less fortunate. Well done Sarah and all your helpers! We have so far raised over £150 and money is still coming in.

Tokens

A big thank-you to all of you who have been collecting book tokens. We have received a staggering 16,500 so far. Our new target is 20,000 and hopefully a visit from Michael Owen if we prove to be the school that has collected the most tokens at the end of the promotion.
The Mirror Newspapers together with Pringles have started printing tokens that can be exchanged for Sports Equipment. If you or a relative read these papers could you please cut out the tokens and send them into school.

Friends Association

The friends have been very busy again organising events to make money for the school. The Fashion Show was a great success due mainly to the models who did a wonderful job showing off the clothes. Thank you to everybody who came along to support this event. All the children who came to the Disco appeared to enjoy the evening, the appearance of the fire engines adding to the excitement! Our next event is a Car Boot Sale on the 24th of April so if you are having a clear out over the Easter holiday why not save any unwanted items and book a pitch. Another important date for your diary is June 12th when we will be holding our Summer Fair. A lot of work goes into organising these events so if you can help in any way, either setting up beforehand or helping on the day please offer your services, you will be made very welcome.

Soccer School

Hot Shot soccer school offered free training to all pupils on Wednesday 24th March and will be once again running a soccer school during the Summer holidays.

Joyce

On February 4th we were pleased to welcome Esther Payne to our Assembly. She was presented with this years donation for Joyce, the young child we sponsor in the Philippines.
After the Easter break we will be continuing with our fund-raising activities.
